Wale[squared]

Greetings!!
Time is going by so fast! When we first arrived in Ghana, we spent a week in the
capital (Accra) where we were able to tour some of the country. We went
to Cape Coast and visited the slave castles where slaves used to be bought
and sold during the slave trade.
Yesterday, Lauren and I watched the Walewale girls’ soccer team play a
match against the boys. Before the match we we’re able to train with
some of the girls who taught us some of their moves. We live in a
volunteer house with a long term volunteer (she’s great). Our daily view
outside our window is donkeys…lots and lots of donkeys, goats, sheep
and chickens. On the weekensds we usually travel to Tamale which is
about an hour and a half away.. they have internet there and pizza. To
get to Tamale we take the tro-tro..which looks similar to a mini-van but
squeezes in about 25-30 people and sometimes a goat (refer to Lauren’s
blog for further tro-tro details). In Walewale, greetings are very
imporant so we’ve learned how to say good morning, good afternnoon and
good evening in the local langage- Mampruli. Dasuba means good morning
in Mampruli and the usual response is na. Yesterday I was also able to
go to a Charismatic church with the volunteer I live with. There was a
lot of music, dancing and prayer which was inetresting to see (it was
great!). There’s not too much variety of food here in Walewale- the
staple foods are yams, rice and plaintains but we’re slowly learning how
to cook local dishes!
Lauren and I are planning confidence building activities for girls clubs
members this week at a number of schools in and around Walewale. I’ll
keep you posted on how those go.
Goodbye from Walewale for now!!
