Biography
Posted by Claire Gemmill on April 15th, 2010
My name is Claire Gemmill and I am currently a third year student of anthropology and women’s studies at the University of Guelph. My step-mother lived in Africa for 2 years and worked in rural development. Growing up I always loved hearing her stories and experiences of living in the country – she even had some of the clothing from Zimbabwe exhibited around the house! Ever since I was a young child I always dreamed of going to the continent to help in some way, shape or form. As I grew older and learned more about Africa I was able to comprehend just how large the problem of HIV/AIDS is among the people living there. The more that I learned about Africa and AIDS, the larger my drive became to go there and help people affected with HIV/AIDS. As a female Canadian citizen, who has the right to an education and the ability to be mobile within Canada and the world, I feel it is part of my duty as an empowered global citizen to use my resources in order to enact change. This program has created an opportunity for me that I need to take advantage of at this point in my life. I feel that Project Serve International has created an experience for me that I have always dreamed of, and now is the time for me to take it and go….!
