Pre-departure thoughts of Botswana, Africa
Posted by Christa on May 1st, 2006
So I just finished the bulk of my packing to go to Gaborone, Botswana, Africa. Only having a couple of weeks to prepare while I was finishing my exams was a little stressful. It still hasn’t really hit me that I will be away for 6 weeks. Most people don’t think that 6 weeks is a long time, but being separated by an ocean for over a month seems like a lot. My role will be the Career Development Officer at Mabogo Dinku Advice Centre at Sedibeng. I will be helping out-of-school youth with their resumes and job interview skills. I am supposed to take what I learned at school and apply it here. I’m excited and nervous at the same time because I don’t really know what to expect. I am assuming that the Centre have a system presently in place and that my role is to fine-tune and enhance it. What I did not know is that my expectations about my role were not this accurate and that I would be in for a couple of surprises.
