Hi Everyone!
My name is Maryam Woldeyohannes. I’m a 3rd year Biomedical Sciences student at the University of Waterloo. I’m originally from Africa and only recently moved to Canada about 5 years ago. Since my move to Canada, I’ve always believed that I would return to Africa and somehow contribute to its growth and development. So when I found out about the WUSC/Beyond Borders program through a friend, a program that allows students like me to spend about 3 months doing international volunteer work, I jumped at the opportunity and applied as soon as I could. I was very intrigued with the idea of spending an entire summer on my own, doing volunteer work in a different country.
There are countless reasons why I’m interested in this volunteer experience. Besides the obvious reasons of the desire to travel, learn a new language, experience a new culture and meet new people, I truly believe that this experience will provide me with so much personal growth and wisdom that I can use in my life.
While in Gaborone, I will be working at the Holy Cross Hospice. In part, the Hospice is my choice of placement because of my interest in pursuing a medical career. Spending a summer providing care and support to those living with HIV/AIDS will not only be a greatly rewarding experience, but it will also help be acquire certain skills that I will need if I am to become a doctor. Being born in a 3rd world country, I understand that the issues that affect most African countries are more complex than they seem. I understand that my role is as much as that of a student, as it is a volunteer. I’m coming into this experience with an open mind and a readiness for any challenges that may come my way.
I am truly looking forward to this summer!
