I cannot believe it has already been almost five months since the end of my placement with JRS in Malawi! It seems like yesterday that I was saying goodbye to my students and colleagues, and yet the build-up to my placement last year seems like eons ago. This to say that my placement, more specifically the people I met, the things I saw and heard in my time at Dzaleka Refugee Camp as well as in Malawi in general, have had a huge impact on me and will be ingrained in my memory for the rest of my life. I am so grateful for the experience I had and hope to be able to continue the work I started in Malawi in some way here in Canada. Thank you WUSC, SWB and JRS-Malawi for a life-changing internship. As they say in Chichewa, tiwonana!

I’ve been in Lilongwe for almost a month already, time is going by so fast! I’ve slowly settling into lessons at the secondary school where I’m teaching Form 1 English, and ESL conversation classes at the vocational school. I’ll also be starting up a French club in an effort to try to help the refugees who’ve come from French-speaking countries maintain their French. Working in the refugee camp makes for an amazing experience but it can also be heartbreaking at times.

On the other hand, working with the WUSC Student Refugee Program students has been so exciting. It was impossible not to get swept up in the excitement of the moment when the students finally found out which universities they’d be attending in the fall and I was so glad to be able to participate in their pre-departure orientation.

I’ve included a picture of the JRS schools in Dzaleka Camp as well as a picture of the WUSC students after their orientation session – coming soon to Canada!

My name is Julie Lafleche and I will be teaching at the camp school in Dzaleka Refugee Camp in Malawi. I am currently completing an MA in Human Security and Peacebuilding at Royal Roads University and have a Bachelor of Education from the University of Ottawa. I specialized in teaching French as a Second Language (FSL) but have taught both English as a Second Language (ESL) and FSL. Given my background in education, I am particularly interested in education initiatives within the field of humanitarian relief and assistance and for this reason have chosen to do an internship with WUSC-SWB. I am really looking forward to adapting to life in Malawi as well as to meeting new people and teaching in a different setting.
